The mechanics: ink never touches the plate-to-paper path directly
"Offset" describes the one genuinely odd thing about the process: the image never travels straight from plate to paper. Each colour's image is made as a thin aluminium plate whose image areas attract oily ink and whose non-image areas, kept damp by a film of fountain solution, repel it. The inked image transfers ("offsets") from the plate cylinder onto a rubber-covered blanket cylinder, and the blanket presses it onto the sheet as it passes through the nip against the impression cylinder. The soft blanket conforms to the paper surface, which is why offset holds fine detail on both coated and uncoated stock.
A four-colour job runs the sheet through four printing units in sequence, cyan, magenta, yellow and black, each with its own plate, and the units must agree with each other to a fraction of a millimetre. When they do, the job is "in register" (the term this masthead is named for). Spot colours or coatings add further units.
Make-ready: the fixed cost that shapes every quote
Between jobs, a press crew mounts new plates, loads stock, and brings ink densities and register up to target, burning time and waste sheets before the first saleable copy. That setup, make-ready, is the fixed cost that makes short offset runs expensive and long runs cheap, because once the press is up and running, each extra sheet costs little more than paper and ink. It is the entire reason short-run work migrated to digital presses, and the reason offset keeps the long runs (the cost anatomy is unpacked in our pricing guide).
The colour target is a standard, not a vibe
Commercial offset colour is process-controlled against ISO 12647-2, Graphic technology: process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proof and production prints, part 2, offset lithographic processes. Per ISO's own catalogue description, the standard specifies the primary process parameters for sheet-fed and heat-set web offset, including the ink set and solid-ink colour values, screening and tone value; coldset newspaper work is excluded. The standard's text is paywalled, so we cite what ISO publishes about its scope rather than its clauses; the practical point for a buyer is that "printed to ISO 12647-2" is a checkable claim about measured colour, not marketing (see also our colour systems explainer for how G7 relates).
What automation has done to the press room
The reason a modern offset job is cheaper and more consistent than the same job twenty years ago is that the measurement-and-adjust loop is now built into the press. Two current examples, cited from the manufacturers' own product documentation:
- Komori's PDC print density control systems measure a colour bar and feed corrections back to the press automatically, handling density, dot gain, trapping, L*a*b* colour difference and register in one pass, with a minimum patch size of 3.0 by 3.0 millimetres, on press formats from 26 to 44 inches. Komori states the system is compatible with ISO 12647-2, G7 and Japan Color, which is the interesting part: the automation is built to hit the public standard, not a house target. - Heidelberg's Speedmaster SX 102 product documentation claims 50 per cent less make-ready time with its AutoPlate Pro automatic plate changing compared with its own earlier AutoPlate, inline colour and register measurement during make-ready and the run via Prinect Inpress Control 3, and a "Push to Stop" mode in which the press moves through queued jobs autonomously. Both examples make the same commercial point: make-ready, offset's historical weakness, is exactly what the manufacturers have spent two decades attacking, which keeps pushing the offset-versus-digital crossover point lower than buyers expect.
When offset is the right answer
Long runs of consistent work: catalogues, magazines, packaging, anything where the per-unit cost matters more than the setup cost. Wide substrate latitude, dependable colour to a public standard, and economics that improve every thousand sheets. When the run is short, the job is personalised, or the deadline is tomorrow morning, digital wins, and a good trade shop runs both and quotes you whichever side of the crossover your job sits on.
